Gregory Distribution has taken delivery of two new double deck curtainsiders from Tiger Trailers, each with the ability to operate as either a single or a double deck unit – the first of this type to join Gregory Distribution’s large fleet.

Each 13.7m tri-axle straight frame curtainsider has been designed so that the fixed deck can be easily unbolted and removed, affording Gregory Distribution maximum flexibility for its operations – and allowing it to transport a huge range of potential loads.

Gregory Distribution turned to Tiger for the new removable double decks after the Winsford-based manufacturer demonstrated its commitment to innovation with the development of one of the industry’s first pillarless chipliner trailers, which it built for the company in 2015.

Dan Saunders, Technical Support Manager at Gregory Distribution, says: "The versatility of a removable deck was a really important factor in the design; following the success of the chipliner, we knew we could rely on Tiger to meet the challenge.

"We worked really closely with the design team to ensure they understood how we intended to use the load space – the trailers matched the brief perfectly and the entire process was seamless."

The new removable double decks feature a front aerofoil and rear roof scoop that improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency – key attributes when considering each trailer will be on the road seven days a week, travelling up to 156,000km a year.

The two new additions join 12 other Tiger trailers already in operation with Gregory Distribution – a mixture of single and fixed double deck variants – and will stay in the fleet for 10 years.

Gregory Distribution, which will celebrate 100 years of trading in 2019, serves more than 400 customers, ranging from local companies to large, multi-national organisations, delivering a wide variety of goods both regionally and nationally.

Lancashire-based furniture manufacturer Senator has expanded its commercial vehicle fleet with a range of new trailers and demount bodies from Tiger Trailers, each helping to improve operational efficiency and combat the challenging access restrictions the company faces for some inner-city deliveries.

The order consists of two 26-tonne DAF rigids with custom demount bodywork, each operating with bespoke tandem-axle drawbar trailers. Tiger has also supplied four 13.6-metre tri-axle box vans into the company’s striking black commercial fleet.

The new box vans will operate on trunking routes across the UK, while the drawbar and demount combinations will join Senator’s existing fleet of similar vehicles, each employed to effectively double the efficiency of its inner-city deliveries by halving the number of journeys required from its Lancashire depot.

James Stokes, Head of Logistics at Senator says: “The demount units are the most effective way of transporting furniture orders from our main depot into large cities as we can quickly swap the body and often make two separate delivery runs with the same truck. It’s a solution that really works in our favour.

“Our business lends itself to this demount body approach and Tiger really stepped up to the mark to ensure that these new additions, alongside the larger trailers, were ideally suited to our needs.”

Tiger has designed each demount body using a hot-dip galvanised steel subframe, with four heavy-duty beams and two retracting location cones, each with ISO twist locks. The rear LED light units were specifically designed to suit Senator’s existing demount bodies, while also avoiding any potential damage from the Anteo tail-lift. Each body also features four extremely robust and durable swing-down legs, making them ideal for Senator’s intense quick-change delivery approach.

The two drawbar trailers have a straight-frame chassis design, with a single tow beam. They each feature a raise and lower valve for the suspension, with the valve situated on an extended bracket between the axle wings for ease of use.

“We have worked with Tiger for the last two years. In that time they have really focused on understanding our business and looking at ways to help us drive efficiency to new levels. It’s great to see a company which will bend over backwards to support its customers,” Stokes adds.

The new trucks and trailers will be on the road every day of the week and are expected to travel at least 50,000 miles a year, with Senator expecting to keep the trailers on its fleet for up to 20 years, while it will look to replace the trucks after 10.

Senator was founded in 1976 and has grown to become the UK’s largest manufacturer of office furniture. Its UK headquarters can be found in Lancashire and it has manufacturing facilities in Europe, America and Australia.

Tiger Trailers has expanded its team with the appointment of a new Technical Sales Manager, who joins the company with eight years of industry experience and a passion for commercial vehicles and manufacturing.

Tom Stott, 24, began his career as an apprentice aged 16, joining the Cartwright Group on the production line, before moving up to become a Production Planner. After progressing into an aftersales and warranty role at Cartwright, he took on his first sales position in January 2017, as National Sales Representative – Truck Bodies at Schmitz Cargobull.

Offering unprecedented experience for such a young age, Stott’s valuable skills in trailer and truck body engineering, production, aftersales care and sales make him the perfect candidate to join Tiger’s rapidly growing team.

Commenting on his appointment, Stott says: “Like many people, I’ve been watching the rapid growth of the Tiger Trailers brand and when the chance arose to be part of the team, I jumped at the opportunity. This is a dynamic, forward-thinking company which is very quickly becoming one of the industry’s major players; it’s incredibly exciting to have been selected to take on this new role.”

Stott will report directly to Darren Holland, Sales Director, with a remit spanning the full Tiger Trailers product line-up, including dry freight single and double-deck trailers, truck bodies and the company’s latest offering – its Tiger Deck loading solution for double-deck trailers.

Discussing his role with Tiger, he adds: “When the new purpose-built factory opens next year, Tiger will have world-class production facilities which will put it in an even stronger position than currently. That’s a fantastic sales proposition to be taking to the market; and it’s an opportunity which was literally too good to turn down.”

Outside of work, Stott dedicates much of his time to helping the charity Support our Paras, raising money for the cause in a range of interesting and challenging ways – most recently, in November 2017, by flipping an 85kg tractor tyre up mount Snowdon!

LANCHESTER WINES REPLACES EIGHT TRAILERS WITH TWO THANKS TO INNOVATIVE LOADING SOLUTION FROM TIGER TRAILERS AND JOLODA

One of the UK’s leading wine merchants, Lanchester Wines, has replaced eight standard trailers in its commercial vehicle fleet with two new purpose-built curtainsiders from Tiger Trailers – a move made possible thanks to the inclusion of the super-efficient Hydraroll loading system from Joloda.

The new 13.7m tri-axle trailers were developed by Tiger, in conjunction with Joloda, to help Lanchester Wines streamline logistics between the company’s four warehouses in the North East.

Joloda’s innovative conveyor system features a moving slipchain floor built into the loading bay which extends into the trailer itself, creating a seamless transition between the two. The system is capable of loading or unloading up to 24 pallets of wine in as little as 80 seconds, a process that previously took 40 minutes – equating to a time saving of 97 per cent per load.

John Mitcheson, Logistics Manager at Lanchester Wines, says: “We invested close to £450,000 on the full Joloda system, which is the first of its kind for a UK wine business. The system means that while our vehicles are on the road, our warehouse team are able to pick and prepare the stock ready for instant loading when the driver returns.

“Installed across all of Lanchester Wines’ warehouses, this system radically reduces driver downtime and increases efficiencies, which are in turn passed on to our customers.”

Tiger worked closely with Joloda on a bespoke trailer design that actually incorporates the system into the chassis itself. The team then included elements like a bespoke-built under-run bar to protect the Hydraroll mechanism and solid steel reinforcement along the side rave to minimise potential damage from forklifts – all measures designed to prolong the operational life of both the system and the trailer.

Karen McBride, Project Manager at Joloda, says: “Our innovative loading solutions have been used across a number of industries for more than 20 years, with the Hydraroll system installed at close to 500 companies worldwide. To ensure the system operates perfectly it’s imperative that we work very closely with the trailer manufacturer from the outset – happily the team at Tiger were fantastic throughout the entire process.

“Joloda works with some of the largest food and beverage companies in the world, but it’s really great to see our system make a real difference to an established large scale and independent business like Lanchester Wines,” McBride adds.

Both new trailers operate on a single shift pattern, travelling up to 250 miles a day, five days a week. However, the system is so efficient that the current shift pattern could be doubled or even trebled in the future as the business grows.

“The new trailers effortlessly handle around 15 loads a day between the four sites, carrying up to 24 pallets on each trip. As the company continues to expand and the volume increases we’ll certainly be looking at installing additional Hydraroll systems to the loading bays across our sites, which in turn will require a few more specialist trailers in order to maximise efficiency,” concludes Mitcheson.

Established in 1980, Lanchester Wines is one of the UK’s leading supplier of quality wines and spirits to the trade. Combined, its fleet of 11 delivery vehicles and external partners handle around 2,600 pallets of wine a day.

Third-party logistics provider Howard Tenens has taken delivery of three double deck longer semi-trailers (LSTs) from Tiger Trailers for its contract with Toolstation, one of Britain’s fastest growing suppliers of tools and accessories to the trade. Their arrival marks a first for the company, being designed to increase load capacity and improve operational efficiency.

Tiger Trailers developed the 15.6m step frame double deck box van trailers in conjunction with Howard Tenens and Toolstation to meet the specific requirements of the company’s growing delivery demands.

Richard Philpotts, National Fleet and Compliance Manager at Howard Tenens, says: “Two years ago we commissioned a standard double deck trailer from Tiger to trial in Toolstation’s fleet. The improvements in efficiency were notable, but since then the company has gone from strength to strength and the additional capacity of the LSTs became increasingly appealing.

“We knew the spec had to be perfect to get the full benefit of the 15.6m length, and following a detailed design consultation, Tiger worked relentlessly to find the perfect double deck solution. These new trailers are proving really versatile – combining the ability to carry a diverse payload, with an increased number of cages.”

Tiger’s bespoke design includes a three-quarter length hydraulic moving deck rated to seven tonnes, with a fixed deck over the step frame specifically designed to house plastic piping and other abnormal loads, providing a dedicated area for products that previously would have taken up valuable cage space.

The LSTs can accommodate up to 87 cages – 38 on both decks, with an additional 11 on the neck of the trailer – optimising efficiency when transporting stock between Toolstation’s distribution centres in Redditch, Daventry and Swindon.

Each trailer also includes an on-board weighing device to ensure every load remains within legal limits, a self-tracking rear axle for improved manoeuvrability and an aerodynamic sloping front roof to lower drag and reduce fuel consumption.

Howard Tenens operates a mixed 40-strong commercial vehicle fleet for its Toolstation contract, including 25 standard trailers and three LSTs. The new additions are expected to stay in operation for seven years and will be on the road five days a week, averaging 180,000km a year.

Established in 2003, Toolstation is a UK direct sale and online supplier of trade tools, accessories and hardware products. Its head office and one of its distribution centres is based in Bridgwater, Somerset, with two further distribution centres in Redditch and Daventry. Its 300th branch opened in February 2018.

Winsford-based Tiger Trailers has become the first trailer manufacturer and commercial vehicle bodybuilder to become a partner of the Northern Powerhouse, which is working to strengthen the local economy through investment in skills, innovation, transport and culture.

The announcement comes just weeks ahead of contractors starting the build phase for Tiger Trailers’ new £22m purpose-built factory. This will sit on a 20-acre plot of land close to Tiger’s current site and support the creation of approximately 270 new jobs, including 80 within the next 12 months.

Tiger’s invitation to join the Northern Powerhouse followed a meeting with local Member of Parliament Antoinette Sandbach and Northern Powerhouse Minister, Jake Berry, during which they discussed the firm’s ambitious growth plans, alongside its commitment to offering apprenticeships and graduate training.

John Cartwright, Joint Managing Director of Tiger Trailers, says: “Tiger has become a great success story for British manufacturing and we’re thrilled to be joining the Northern Powerhouse. In just four years we’ve manufactured more than 4,000 trailers and bodies, developed a fantastic customer base and become one of the fastest growing businesses in our sector.

“From day one we have set out to employ the best people we can, whilst also developing our own apprenticeship programme to nurture young talent. And it’s by having such a skilled team that we’ve been able to build products which are delivering real efficiency savings for the industry. We support everything the Northern Powerhouse stands for, and we are incredibly proud to be growing our business here in Cheshire.”

Northern Powerhouse Minister, Jake Berry says: “As a rapidly growing, innovative manufacturer supporting hundreds of jobs in the local economy and providing new opportunities for apprentices and young people at the beginning of their careers, Tiger Trailers embodies the dynamism and ingenuity of the Northern Powerhouse. I am delighted to welcome them as a new Northern Powerhouse Partner and I’m looking forward to working with Tiger Trailers on supporting their contribution to the economically resurgent North.”

Tiger Trailers plans to begin the process of transferring production into its new factory in late 2018, with the site becoming fully operational during early 2019. Once live, it will feature a dedicated in-house training facility that will allow Tiger to potentially double its yearly apprentice intake, as well as running its own training courses covering almost every aspect of the manufacturing operation.

Tiger Trailers’ decision to join the Northern Powerhouse follows news of John and Steven Cartwright being named in the Top 10 of Motor Transport’s prestigious Power Players for 2018. They feature alongside Tesla’s Elon Musk, CEO of DX Group Lloyd Dunn, CEO of Eddie Stobart Logistics Alex Laffey, and the CEO of Hermes UK Martin de Lange – each selected for being key influencers within the transport and logistics industry for the coming year.

Tiger Trailers’ Joint Managing Directors, John and Steven Cartwright, have been named in the Top 10 of Motor Transport’s prestigious Power Players for 2018. Steven and John feature alongside the likes of Tesla’s Elon Musk, CEO of DX Group Lloyd Dunn, CEO of Eddie Stobart Logistics Alex Laffey, and the CEO of Hermes UK Martin de Lange in the publication’s comprehensive list designed to showcase the key influencers within the transport and logistics industry for the coming year.

With the number of trailers and rigid bodies rolling off the production line growing every day, and with work soon to start on Tiger’s new state-of-the-art purpose built factory, 2018 looks set to be a massive year for the company – something that has not gone unnoticed by one of the industry’s most respected publications. Happy New Year!

Motor Transport say:

John and Steve Cartwright, Joint MDs, Tiger Trailers

When brothers John and Steven left the family firm Cartwright Group and said they were going to set up a rival trailer builder Tiger Trailers, they were met with a degree of scepticism. With the UK market already awash with product from domestic and overseas trailer builders, was there room for a brash new start-up to set up a new manufacturing plant from scratch? As it turns out there was, and Tiger’s first three years have been so successful it has just relocated to a bigger factory to cope with demand. Even better news is that Tiger’s success hasn’t been at the expense of Cartwright Group, which has just had a record year.

Tiger has benefited from some former Cartwright customers keeping faith with it and giving it initial orders – but no one can build a successful business on favours alone. Rather, the Tiger has roared due to genuine innovation in areas such as moving deck double-deck trailers and producing a quality product at the right price. Reports of the death of British manufacturing have been exaggerated.

Four top-performing apprentices at Tiger Trailers have been recognised for their hard work, positive attitude and impressive college results throughout 2017, winning an Alan Cartwright Foundation Apprentice Award.

Ben Glavin (Year 1), Callum Whitby (Year 2), Cole Graham (Year 3) and Ryan Dickens (Final year) were each presented with a share of a £900 prize fund in recognition of their outstanding efforts.

The Alan Cartwright Foundation Apprentice Awards were launched in 2016 by Joint Managing Directors John and Steven Cartwright, in memory of their late father – who throughout his career was passionate about bringing apprentices into the industry.

John Cartwright says: “In an industry where apprentices and skilled technicians are in short supply, we’re lucky to have a hugely capable pool of talent learning manufacturing the Tiger way, alongside our experienced team. We’ve worked closely with Warrington & Vale Royal College to tailor a programme which provides a fantastic career opportunity. Selecting this year’s winners was a very tough decision.”

The 2017 Apprenticeship Awards saw Callum Whitby rewarded for the second time in succession, following a fantastic performance during the start of his second-year apprenticeship. “Callum has gone the extra mile throughout the year, receiving first class reviews from his mentors, supervisors and college tutors. We’re delighted he’s chosen to be part of the Tiger Trailers team.”

Tiger Trailers has enrolled more than 30 apprentices into its programme since the company was founded in 2014. Its new factory, set to open in late 2018, will feature a dedicated training centre, providing Tiger with the opportunity to increase the number of apprentices it takes on each year, as well as adding to the range of skills and courses it offers.

The enhanced training facilities will support Tiger’s growth into the next decade, combining valuable opportunities for career development with the most modern trailer and bodybuilding manufacturing facility in the country.

Boughey Distribution has updated its fleet with 50 new curtainsiders from Tiger Trailers, replacing older assets from rival manufacturers and increasing Tiger’s share of the fleet to more than 75 per cent.

The Nantwich-based logistics company was one of Tiger’s launch customers, taking delivery of its first Tiger curtainsiders in early 2015 – with this new order taking the Tiger Trailers-built fleet to 156 units. The latest delivery comprises 35 4.2m and 15 4.5m tall clearspan tri-axle trailers, with the taller assets being used to support specific contracts requiring double-stacked loads.

Paul Brimelow, Group Fleet Engineer at Boughey Distribution, says: “We were one of Tiger’s very first customers, and the fact we are gradually replacing the entire fleet speaks volumes. We know what Tiger is capable of in terms of quality and customer care. They do everything they can to support us, and if we ever have an issue, they work to address it immediately – you can’t put a price on what that’s worth.”

The new trailers have been built to Boughey’s bespoke specification, including 13 pairs of load restraints and rear bunching straps fitted at the rear corner pillars, with the design including snap hooks and rings on the inside, for maximum ease of use. Flush fitting rear doors made from galvanised steel, with four hinges and robust double door lock bars boost load security, plus the trailers are certified to EN 12642-XL standards.

Brimelow adds: “This is no ordinary supplier relationship; we regard it more as a partnership. Tiger Trailers take on board our feedback and bend over backwards to support us.

“They also make decisions fast – if we ask for something, there’s no delay whilst they wait for a factory in anothe¬r location to confirm whether or not they can do it. They’re incredibly receptive to feedback and the quality of the product keeps us coming back.”

The new additions to the fleet have been supplied on an eight-year lease direct from Tiger Trailers, and are each mounted with BPW axles, Knorr Bremse braking system and specified on the customer’s preferred Michelin tyre policy.

Boughey Distribution, part of NWF Group, serves a wide range of companies across the North West of England and further afield, offering specialist expertise in ambient grocery distribution and storage.

AO.com has taken delivery of 80 new rigid trucks featuring Tiger Trailers bodywork, replacing older vehicles operating in the AO.com delivery fleet. The deal represents the first rigid bodies Tiger has built for the company, having supplied double deck trailers for its trunking fleet since 2014.

Mounted to 7.5-tonne Mercedes-Benz Atego chassis, supplied to AO.com by Ciceley Commercials, the Tiger Trailers design team were tasked with the challenge of making the fleet more efficient and cost effective, namely by improving the truck’s aerodynamics and by making them as light as possible, without compromising on strength.

Jon Makin, National Fleet Manager for AO.com, says: “We have been working with Tiger since 2014 and knew their design team would be up to the task. They look at things differently to other manufacturers, placing the efficiency of the design at the forefront of the process.”

Tiger’s intelligent design and choice of materials was key to it meeting AO.com’s strict weight requirements. Aluminium was used in the bearers, chassis runners and in the panels of the rear roller-door – replacing the more standard approach of using wood – while ultra-thin Ecofont side panels kept the weight down without any loss of rigidity or strength.

Significant weight saving was also achieved through the inclusion of a tuck-under tail-lift, a change from the heavier column lifts used previously. Without having to lower the tail-lift to access the load space, the tuck-under design also helps to increase the speed and efficiency of the loading and unloading process.

To improve the aerodynamic performance, the new rigid bodies are the first to feature Tiger’s new aerofoil design – specially moulded to create smoother airflow around the vehicle, improving fuel efficiency to offer a significant reduction in running costs.

“These trucks operate everywhere in the UK, from country roads to city streets,” continues Makin. “The delivery routes we run require the vehicles to be flexible enough to access any destination. Each truck will clock up between 80,000 and 100,000km a year so the new aerodynamics Tiger has incorporated will make a significant difference to their fuel efficiency.”

Each vehicle is on the road seven days a week and is expected to make between 30 and 40 drops per day, primarily delivering large volume white goods. This multi-drop schedule requires a dependable load security system, so Tiger included ‘slam locks’ on the rear roller-door that are quickly and easily secured with a key – removing the need for any additional locking system.

The new vehicles have been specified on three and five-year leases from Ciceley Commercials, giving AO.com more flexibility when it comes to refreshing the fleet down the line.

Mike Lewis, Dealer Principal at Ciceley Commercials, says: “We value the longstanding relationship we have with AO.com, and in turn totally respect the relationship they have built with Tiger Trailers. It was clear from the outset that each company shares a similar approach, with the decision makers in the business involved at every step – that’s something that really struck a chord with us.”

Started more than 17 years ago, AO.com is a specialist two-man delivery company that operates a mixed commercial vehicle fleet; it delivers goods nationwide through its van, rigid truck and double deck trailer fleet, with the latter two vehicle types now being built by Tiger Trailers.

Tiger Trailers has designed and built the bodies for 57 new rigid trucks for Hovis, taking the number of Tiger-built assets in the customer’s fleet to 87 rigids and 14 double deck trailers.

The new trucks – 27 7.5-tonne Mitsubishi Canter Duonics and 30 12-tonne DAF LFs – were supplied by TOM Vehicle Rental to replace older vehicles in the fleet, with key specification changes at 7.5-tonnes.

Hovis produces 1.3 million loaves a day for delivery across the UK, relying on the efficiency of its delivery fleet to meet that demand. To further increase this efficiency, Tiger designed the new bodies to be as lightweight as possible in order to maximise payload capacity – for the 7.5-tonne vehicles, it was able to return a payload of 3,200kg, which is exceptional for a truck of this size.

Tony Stuart, Head of Logistics Operations Support at Hovis, explains: “Getting maximum payload from these vehicles was vitally important to us. Tiger has worked hard to find ways of giving us that extra capacity; this enables us to carry more loaves per vehicle and make fewer journeys – which brings both operational and environmental benefits.”

As part of the weight-saving design, the bodies were built with aluminium bearers and chassis runners, with the panels constructed from an ultra-lightweight honeycomb composite that also boasts superb strength and durability.

Tiger’s bespoke approach puts its customer’s requests at the forefront of the design process. For Hovis, this included the addition of treadplate floors to facilitate easier loading and unloading of bread baskets, as well as Aztec weighing equipment over the rear axle to ensure the maximum payload is never exceeded.

The Mitsubishi and DAF chassis have been supplied by TOM Vehicle Rental as part of a fixed rental agreement. After positive reviews from Hovis relating to the Tiger-built double deck trailers operating in its fleet, the vehicle rental company was more than happy to go on the bakery’s recommendation for Tiger to manufacture the bodies for its new rigids.

Glenn Murphy, National Account Manager at TOM Vehicle Rental, says: “We took a trip to Tiger’s Winsford facility and were really impressed. Tiger’s engineering team were very approachable and worked with us throughout to ensure that we were able to add value as a supplier, delivering the right vehicle specification for Hovis’ needs.”

The new rigids will be in operation across the UK, making store deliveries six days a week. As one of the UK’s most recognisable brands, Hovis employees close to 3,200 people across eight bakeries, four flour mills and three distribution centres.

Indochinese Tiger

Thailand discovered a new breeding population of this critically endangered tiger sub-species in one of its national parks. Camera traps discovered a small population with at least six cubs in the jungle – a fantastic discovery considering poaching and the loss of habitat had reduced the global population of Indochinese tigers to less than 250. It was thought that the success was due to the stepping-up of anti-poaching efforts.

Siberian Tigers

Stricter anti-poaching laws has also seen the population of the Amur tiger – more commonly known as the Siberian tiger – come back from the brink. The Amur population had dropped to only 20 or 30 animals in the 1930s, putting the sub-species on the brink of extinction. After the Russian government introduced measures aimed at boosting Amur numbers, like restricting logging in tiger habitat areas and increasing penalties for poaching and the possession of tiger parts, there may be more than 500 Amurs in the wilds of Siberia.

The Future

The WWF’s goal is to increase the world’s tiger population in the wild to more than 6,000 by 2022, the next year of the tiger in the Chinese calendar.

When Tiger Trailers opened the doors to its Winsford factory in 2014, one of the first things Joint Managing Directors John and Steven Cartwright wanted to put in place was a well-structured apprenticeship programme, designed to nurture the best local talent from the area. To date, it has enrolled more than 30 young people to the scheme.

Steven Cartwright says: “We want to build a passionate, skilled workforce here at Tiger – and our apprentices are very much a part of that. We put a lot of effort into the programme and are willing to invest in every single person who joins the course. It’s great to see that all the hard work our original apprentices have put in is now coming to fruition, and we’re excited to see what the next group has to offer!”

Through a partnership with Mid-Cheshire College – now Warrington & Vale Royal College – Tiger originally offered a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacturing. This year, the latest recruits are tackling a two-year, Level 2 programme, removing the mostly classroom-based third year. This change in approach was built around apprentice feedback, with the majority wanting a course weighed less heavily towards the classroom that they could complete sooner. That said, Tiger will support any of its apprentices to continue to Level 3, deciding if this is necessary on a case by case basis.

Each apprentice learns the skills of the industry on the shop floor, working with a mentor for four months on each of the major manufacturing stages; from body building and welding, through to auto electrics and pre-delivery inspection, each apprentice gains the knowledge required to help build the trailers and truck bodies Tiger supplies to some of the UK’s most recognisable brands.

Tiger Trailers is rapidly expanding and will soon begin construction on a new £22 million manufacturing facility, also located in Winsford. The new factory will also see an expansion of the company’s apprenticeship programme, with a dedicated training centre included in the building design that will allow Tiger to potentially double its yearly intake, as well as offer new courses across every aspect of the business.

“The new factory and training centre will provide us with the opportunity to increase the numbers of apprentices we take on each year, as well as adding to the range of skills and courses we are able to offer. This will provide us with all the tools we will need to spearhead Tiger’s growth into the next decade,” concludes Cartwright.

Maxi Haulage has taken its first delivery of 40 unique double deck trailers from Tiger Trailers, featuring a ground-breaking design that will transform productivity for its customers delivering to the Republic of Ireland.

The new 13.6-metre tri-axle, step frame fixed double deck trailers will be used to transport retail cages between the UK and Ireland. Tiger Trailers was tasked by Maxi Haulage to develop a solution that would offer a completely flat lower deck whilst also meeting the 4.65-metre Irish height restrictions – believed to be the first time such a combination has been successfully achieved.

Andy McGuire, General Manager at Maxi Haulage says: “In the past, the 4.65-metre trailers we’ve taken to Ireland have had to include wheel boxes within the load space on the lower deck. We wanted this to be completely flat so that we could carry more cages per load. Tiger stepped up to the challenge and the result has been an increase of seven cages, or 10 per cent. This will significantly improve efficiency and productivity for our customers, which is fantastic.”

Tiger’s innovative design also saw it move away from independent suspension, the only way such trailers were previously able to run low enough. This made them significantly more likely to sustain damage, which in turn increased running costs.

These low-running trailers also made ferry loading and unloading much more difficult, so Tiger and Maxi Haulage consulted the ferry companies during the development stage to ensure the new design would simplify the process.

“Tiger has been able to tick a lot of boxes with these new trailers,” continues McGuire. “We’re happy, our customers are happy, and the ferry companies are happy – it’s a win all round. When we first visited Tiger’s factory in Winsford we wanted to gauge whether they’d be up to the task; it soon became clear that they would be more than capable and they’ve risen to the challenge.”

In addition to the flat deck, Tiger also worked hard to include other bespoke elements in the design, including gates on the neck of the trailers to help secure all available load space and a sloping rear floor to make loading and unloading as easy and efficient as possible.

The new double decks will join a fleet of 635 different trailer variants currently in operation for Maxi Haulage across the UK and Ireland, seven days a week, all year round.

Maxi Haulage has been providing haulage, distribution and logistics services for more than 40 years and the addition of the new Tiger Trailers double decks has cemented its reputation for being at the forefront of new transport solutions.

Next Generation of the Cartwright Family Joins Tiger Trailers

Tiger Trailers has welcomed the fourth generation of the Cartwright family into the industry, with Jack Cartwright, son of Joint Managing Director Steven, joining as Graduate Sales Engineer.

Jack, 20, who graduated from Warwick University with a degree in History in July, admits that his decision to join Tiger Trailers was initially not a straightforward one: “Like many students, when I started university I wasn’t sure exactly what career path I was going to take. All I wanted was to find a job at a forward-thinking, modern company that was really going somewhere.

“I had purposely been ignoring the obvious choice as I wanted to explore my options, but having observed Tiger’s development over the last three years the opportunity to become involved after my graduation became impossible to overlook. I wanted to be involved in a role that allowed me to work face to face with people, so sales seemed the perfect fit.”

Having grown up in a family synonymous with the industry – his great grandfather Stanley established S. Cartwright & Sons, where his late grandfather, Alan, would go on to become one of the UK’s most respected commercial vehicle bodybuilders and trailer manufacturers – Jack understands that his family name has added a little extra pressure and holds no illusions that he has a lot to learn about the industry. Starting on the first rung of the ladder, he will immerse himself in every aspect of the business before settling into the sales team.

“I know people will look at my name, but everyone at Tiger works together and I’m not being treated any differently. The team have so much collective experience and I’m eager to learn from everyone. I really want to prove myself and be a big part of Tiger’s future,” he adds.

A huge sports fan, particularly football and cricket, Jack is a season ticket holder at Manchester City and travels to most games home and away. Elsewhere, he has maintained a keen interest in the study of world history.

Tiger Trailers was happy to welcome Antoinette Sandbach MP to its Winsford factory on August 22. Joint Managing Director, John Cartwright, conducted a tour of the facility to show Ms Sandbach the impressive production line in full swing. From there, she was shown Tiger’s plans for its new £22 million factory, which is scheduled to begin construction at the start of 2018.

Ms Sandbach was keen to discuss Tiger’s ongoing commitment to new jobs in the area – the new site will eventually create more than 270 new positions – as well as building on its already successful apprenticeship scheme.

Cartwright says of the visit: “Ms Sandbach was keen to stress how important youth training in the area was to her, and that she was delighted with what we’re doing to get young people started in what can be an exciting and challenging career. The new factory has been designed to include a specialist training centre for our apprentices and this was something she was very keen to learn more about.

“It’s great to have the support of our local MP and to have someone who will be fighting our corner as we expand the business and help nurture new employment and training in the Winsford area. We were delighted to both have the opportunity to show her around the existing site and showcase the fantastic plans we have in place for the future.”

Tiger Trailers and Sports Direct Continue Winning Ways with New Drawbar Delivery

Sports Direct is in the process of taking delivery of nine new specialist drawbar rigs from Tiger Trailers, part of a 2017 order which also includes six tandem-axle trailers and two double deck trailers – increasing the number of Tiger-built assets in the fleet to 49.

The new 32-tonne drawbar combinations feature a specially designed Tiger Trailers body, mounted to a Scania G410 rigid truck, a customised drawbar hitch system, and a tandem-axle trailer. Each trailer features a bespoke aerodynamically-profiled sloping front roof to lower wind resistance and minimise the chance of accidental damage. Both truck and trailer are also fitted with a Dhollandia tail lift, for easy store deliveries.

Sports Direct took delivery of its first drawbar rigs and 13.4-metre standard box trailers from Tiger Trailers in 2014, and now sources its bodies and trailers exclusively from Tiger.

Jamie Potter, Transport Manager at Sports Direct, explains: “From the outset the team at Tiger worked very closely with us to ensure that the products they built were all perfectly suited to our requirements. The results have always been superb and they’ve never let us down.

“This combination of fantastic build quality and a customer-first approach has kept us coming back. Where other manufacturers would turn you away because their production lines are already full, Tiger always finds a way to accommodate every order. It’s so refreshing to see a company pull out all the stops to put their customers first.”

The trucks are supplied by official Scania dealer, Keltruck, which has worked alongside Tiger Trailers and Sports Direct since the retailer’s first order.

Mike Kelly, Fleet Sales Director at Keltruck, says of the relationship: “The entire build process is always seamless. We supply the chassis, then the team at Tiger quickly and efficiently fit the bodywork, delivering an impeccably finished, expertly built and completely reliable vehicle every time.”

As the UK’s largest sporting goods retailer, Sports Direct operates a large and varied commercial fleet around the clock, 365 days a year, making deliveries to around 670 stores nationwide. Looking forward, the company intends to renew six to 10 trailers a year, eventually leading to its entire fleet being Tiger Trailers-built.

National postal operator, Whistl, has taken delivery of 42 new rigid truck bodies from Tiger Trailers after being impressed by the manufacturing processes in place at the company’s facility in Winsford.

Each of the trucks are leased via contract hire firm, BRS, and represents the first time Whistl has requested Tiger Trailers as its preferred bodybuilder for its rigid fleet – something that BRS was happy to facilitate. The new rigids, mounted to Renault trucks, replace older variants and are split across 26 18-tonne and 16 26-tonne curtainside and box bodies.

Baz Barrett, National Fleet and Compliance Manager for Whistl, explains: “I was visiting Tiger to discuss trailers, but when we were on the factory floor I saw a rigid body being built. I asked the team to take me through the build and that was all it took to convince me. The product was perfect for our needs.”

Tiger Trailers aims to be a ‘one-stop shop’ for all its customers, establishing exactly what each business requires so it can recommend the correct specification for each build. After several meetings with both Whistl and BRS, features including an under-slung tail lift, allowing for easier backing onto loading bays, were incorporated into the design. Tiger Trailers also applied the Whistl livery to each of the trucks, in a move aimed at saving costs for the customer.

Barrett concludes: “Throughout the build process I’ve been back to Tiger’s factory several times and am always impressed by the consistent approach to quality. Their attention to detail throughout the process has been first class. Making suggestions such as handling the application of our livery makes the whole process easier and cost-effective.”

The trucks will be part of the Whistl commercial vehicle fleet and will be based out of the company’s sites in Bristol, Iver, Bolton, Rugby and Glasgow. They will be on the road six days a week collecting mail and parcels across the country, with each vehicle clocking up around 80,000 km per year.

The second largest postal operator in the UK, Whistl provides collection and delivery services for business mail, parcels and door-drop media distribution, both in the UK and internationally.

Tiger Trailers to Increase Production With New Purpose-Built £22m Factory in Cheshire

Tiger announced at this year’s CV Show that it is to build the UK’s most advanced trailer and commercial vehicle body manufacturing facility, with a £22m investment programme.

The new Tiger facility will sit on a 20-acre plot of land – four times the size of its current Winsford base – and see the creation of more than 270 new jobs, including up to 80 within the next 18 months.

The company will break ground on the new site in early 2018, with production to transfer into the new facility later in the year.

Joint Managing Directors John and Steven Cartwright say the investment will facilitate further expansion as the company grows, whilst continuing Tiger’s ethos of containing the entire manufacturing process under one roof. Tiger has already manufactured 2,500 trailers since being founded three years ago.

The expansion will take place in two phases – an initial £14m investment will see a 125,000 sq ft factory built on a new site in Cheshire. It will offer multiple production lines and an improved logistical flow for moving materials into and around the factory, plus a dedicated trailer showroom.

It will also house a fully-equipped training school to help develop the next generation of talent, plus boost facilities to double Tiger’s painting capacity. The new premises will incorporate a weighbridge, flagship customer meeting facilities and parking for 350 cars as well as trailer parking.

Commenting on the exciting plans, John Cartwright says: “For Tiger to achieve what it has in such a short space of time is incredible and testament to every member of the team’s hard work and commitment. The current factory, although one of the most modern in Europe, was adapted to suit our requirements. The ability to design and build a new factory from the ground up will be hugely advantageous for us, providing a platform for growth and the next phase of the Tiger Trailers story.”

Tiger currently employs a team of more than 200 staff and has the capacity to manufacture approximately 35 products per week in its existing factory, which sits on five acres of land. With the completion of phase one, the company will grow its workforce to nearly 300 people – allowing production capacity to rise to approximately 65 units per week. It will also see the installation of the first moving production line for Tiger Trailers, bringing new efficiencies for the business.

Phase two will be timed to meet business demand, and allow the seamless addition of a further 100,000 sq ft of manufacturing capacity on-site, and will grow the workforce to a 500-strong team, with a production capacity of around 120 trailers per week.

Steven Cartwright explains: “From a design perspective, the new factory will be as innovative and well-engineered as our trailers and bodies. We want to offer the best working environment and facilities for our growing team, plus provide a first-class experience for visiting customers. We’re going all out to make our new home a true flagship for UK manufacturing.”

Tiger Population Grows

After a century of constant decline, global wild tiger populations are on the rise! According to the most recent data, around 3,890 tigers now exist in the wild—up from an estimated 3,200 in 2010.

We can attribute this updated minimum number— compiled from national tiger surveys—to rising tiger populations in India, Russia, Nepal, and Bhutan; improved surveys; and enhanced protection of this iconic species.

"This is a pivotal step in the recovery of one of the world’s most endangered and iconic species," said Ginette Hemley, senior vice president of wildlife conservation at WWF. Tiger Choose Overhead Cranes from Street

Tiger Trailers have chosen overhead cranes from Street Crane Company as an integral element in the production system at our new factory. One five tonne and two three tonne overhead cranes were installed in the spring to ensure efficient materials handling. An additional five tonne crane has now been ordered to increase handling and lifting capacity.

Tiger Joint MD John Cartwright explained, "we have previous experience of Street Crane’s equipment and have found that this gives the reliable performance that we need to keep production moving. Having two cranes in each bay gives us greater manufacturing flexibility and ensures that our fitters are not standing around waiting for material or for a fabrication to be moved on to the next production stage."

The cranes installed are all single girder, box beam, units fitted with Street’s advanced ZX series low headroom hoists. Cranes in each bay work independently from a common gantry and so have anti-collision systems installed. Compact loads can be lifted by a standard hook arrangement or may also be handled with a hook mounted lifting beam for longer or more cumbersome loads. Remote radio controllers allow the crane operator to select a position of safety that gives a good view of lifting, moving and load placement. Pendant control is provided as back-up should the need arise.

Street Crane is the UK’s largest crane and hoist manufacturer and offers cranes up to 200 tonnes safe working load. Their Sales Director, Chris Lindley-Smith, commented that, "our overhead cranes are designed for each application to support client production objectives such as lean and just in time manufacturing processes. All our equipment is designed to offer maximum availability with minimal maintenance requirements, giving the user very low life-time cost of ownership. We are really pleased to work with another North West manufacturer like Tiger Trailers in supplying the critical materials handling systems for their new business and it is a pleasure to see this new start-up get established so quickly and start serious production so successfully and efficiently."

ACS/UKAS ISO9001 Tiger are proud to announce that we are now certified as an ISO9001:2008 compliant organisation.

ISO9001 provides a framework for effective quality management systems and is used worldwide. Certification is used as proof of the quality and integrity of an organisation's quality management system. Tiger have been independently assessed by an internationally recognised UKAS accredited body to ensure that they meet the requirements of the standard, and will now continue to be subject to regular audits to ensure the level of effectiveness is maintained.

Tiger worked in conjunction with Cheshire based Diamond ISO to help deliver the certification within an unprecedented timescale. Their MD, Roger Lambourne, said, "I have really enjoyed working with the people at Tiger over the last few weeks to help them realise this remarkable achievement. It is rarely have I seen an organisation prepared to devote the time, skill, hard work and passion necessary in order to complete such a project within the time scales they demanded of themselves. They were collectively a pleasure to work with".

Joint Managing Director John Cartwright said, "the fact we have achieved ISO certification within such a tight time scale is testament to Tiger’s employees and to the systems we have managed to set up over the past few months. This should further demonstrate to our customers the importance we place on delivering a product that leaves them completely satisfied with the service provided".
