CASE STUDY - Expert Logistics

Expert Logistics are part of the AO World PLC. They are specialists in two-man home delivery, with over 25 year's of experience delivering white and brown goods throughout the UK.

From their hub at Crewe, they send products overnight to nine out bases, utilising double deck trailers and then deliver onto customers’ homes with 7.5 and 3.5t vehicles. In October 2014 AO World Plc launched in Germany. Expert Logistics were tasked to implement a completely new transport operation, utilising double deck trailers, to maximise volume and efficiency, for their trunking between out bases. The immediate challenge when operating high-volume trailers in mainland Europe, is the overall height restriction of 4 metres.

Expert approached Tiger with a request to build a 4 metre overall height double deck trailer that could provide a cubic capacity that was similar to a UK, 4.9 metre overall height operation double deck trailer. This challenging design requirement would require a ‘Mega’ style trailer chassis and low coupling height tractor unit. In addition to this, Tiger designed a unique hydraulic moving deck system that would enable the trailer to be loaded by a forklift, through the rear.

In addition to the full length hydraulic moving deck, the trailer also features a ‘lifting roof’. When the deck has been loaded, the ‘up’ button is pressed and as the deck lifts, it picks up the roof, creating enough loading height on the bottom deck for the forklift to enter. A special curtain system has also been designed to enable the roof to move, without the need to release the curtain buckles. Ten trailers are now operating in Germany, with a further eight to enter service later in the year. Jason Charnock, Head of Development from Expert said,“We came to Tiger as we had worked closely with the team before and were confident that they could deliver what we needed. We worked together to arrive at a unique solution to trailer double deck design, to operate in our European operation.

Since the trailers have gone into service, Tiger have accommodated design and specification tweaks and the trailers are operating really well. In addition they have provided support on training and maintenance. Later this year we plan to roll out UK specification trailers, along with additional trailers for Germany in 2016. Darren Holland, Tiger’s Sales Director said, “Expert were one of Tiger’s first customers and their order showed huge commitment and belief in our ability to deliver a highly specialised trailer, for the start of a completely new operation in Germany. We are really looking forward to working with Expert throughout 2016 as we supply further trailers to meet their growing demand.”
